colored pencils aren't just for kids

I had never used colored pencil before this summer. I had used it for coloring way back in the days of coloring books, but I'd never considered it as a serious way to make art.

I started noticing the work colored pencil-purists were posting online. Some of these people are absolutely incredible! Their work is so life-like. I was inspired to see if I could try it out...

If you're a horse lover, this one is for sale.
I learned that the key to colored penciling is depth. Making your colors as dark and as light as you possibly can. That's all that is to it! Also keep your pencils as sharp as possible... Don't ever start a piece without a decent sharpener. I sharpened my pencils literally every minute of continuous use.

Have an amazing weekend (:

the world of watercolor

I use a variety of mediums when I make art.
This includes: chalk pastel, oil pastel, charcoal, graphite, ink (both printing ink and pen), colored pencil, watercolor, watercolor pencil, acrylic & oil paint. Whenever I'm asked what my favorite medium is, it's impossible to answer! Each tool to create art is beautiful and diverse in their purposes.

In ninth grade, I was introduced to watercolor. I had heard that it is one of the most difficult painting techniques you could possibly conquer. I believe it is THE most difficult.

Last fall I was frustrated with how unprofessional my watercolor pieces were turning out. I decided to take a taste of "practice makes perfect!" and began exploring watercolor as much as I could. It's a painful process to try something new, but well worth it. The discipline I forced myself into gave me the exact results I was hoping for! Now it is one of my most favorite mediums to use.

If you love to watercolor but are intimidated with the process, buy watercolor pencils! (Yes, they exist. I didn't know this til a couple years ago!) Its a purchase that I promise you will not regret! I recommend Derwent. Though there are many other brands that are less expensive, I've found Derwent leaves the least amount of pencil-sketch residue. They are my secret to clean eyes and lips on detailed watercolor portraits.
Seriously, whoever invented them is genius.

I'm getting a feel for children's portraits, and I am absolutely loving it. Filling every spare second of my time free from college work with their adorable little faces. This girl is going to be one of a series of little girls for this month.

Remember that if you sacrifice the time for a skill you wish to develop, you will see yourself change. I believe in talent, but I know that hard work can make up for anything you feel that you lack. I wish you all a wonderful week!

starting fresh!

Welcome!

1) For those of you considering enrolling your child in private lessons:
I hope this webpage is sufficient for you to "get a feel" on my work & experience. I teach a wide range of levels, ages, and forms of art. Please contact me through email. (:

2) For those of you interested in purchasing artwork:
Almost everything I post is for sale; if not the original, then I make prints. But please keep in mind that the majority you see are my personal projects. I take requests of just about any kind, as long as the picture(s) are high quality. Any funds from purchased artwork will be dedicated to my college admission and mission fund.

3) For those artists who are seeking encouragement:
I will not only be posting artwork, but sharing many personal tips and experiences. I hope you find them 'illuminating.' Art is my meditation; my "go-to" whenever I need a distraction from life. If that's what it is for you, it doesn't matter what level you're at. (: Anyone can be an artist. Keep up the good work!

Background

My name is Brittany Wolferts and I have always had a passion for art. I've experimented with art in all shapes and forms since I was very young, and as I've grown the drive to express myself through art has only increased.

Through elementary, junior high, and high school I was able to participate in the Reflections program, which helped build my confidence each time a piece of my art was awarded. Through high school I had the opportunity to take Advanced Placement Art through which my portfolio awarded me credits towards my college degree (the best feeling in the world is getting college credit for your favorite subject!!)

This past summer, I had the absolutely amazing experience of traveling to Carmel, California to be John Burton's student for a month. He taught me so much and encouraged my work. Click here for his webpage.

Although I have had many years of experience, I do not claim to be a professional. I still have much to learn, and I feel that one can never be "too talented" in this field. I do this for the love of all things creative, and for the benefit of others.

I hope you enjoy what you find here. (:
